New EU personal data protection regime in the pipeline

After years of negotiations, as 2015 drew to a close, the European institutions reached an agreement on the reorganization of data protection system in the EU, proposed by the European Commission as far back as 2012. Reform is necessary both in terms of strengthening individual fundamental rights as well as in terms of free movement of personal data that is crucial in order to attain the objectives of the Europe 2020 Digital Agenda.
